I normally choose not to engage in political commentary simply because there are so many varying opinions (good) and it seems like people these days are all too willing to get nasty while expressing theirs (bad).
I keep hearing people from both side of the aisle talk about “God Given rights”, or rights they were endowed with by their creator.
Let me throw this out there for public consumption.
You have no God-given rights.
There may be one potential exception to this.
You may possibly (and I say this loosely) may have the right to draw a breath. Unless something or someone larger than you decides otherwise.
You don’t have the God-given right to liberty, to be financially secure, to eat, to any form of education, to be safe, to protect your family, to be happy, or to decide whether another lives or dies.
You don’t even have the right to fornicate and hopefully do your part to ensure the survival of the human species. Another consenting adult has to demonstrate enough consideration for you and then grant you that right.
These things, that many of us associate with leading a happy productive life, are something you either provide for yourself, or as in most cases they have been and continue to be provided for you by complete strangers that I can only assume, must think pretty highly of the American people.
You may dismiss this as oversimplification, but if you really think about it, what happened to the God-given rights of the people horribly victimized in Darfur, Rwanda, Bosnia Herzegovina, nazi Germany, baathist Iraq, and still continue to happen in Syria and Egypt?
Who fought for these people?
Well, sadly in most cases, no one did. They had no rights and there was no one to say anything any different except maybe a few Hollywood celebrities more concerned with making themselves feel good.
In the cases when someone did step up, after the smoke cleared, evil was defeated and peace was forcibly implemented, how many sat down, put pen to paper and wrote down what they had learned about it all?
The Constitution … our Constitution was crafted by men who had lived through a similar process, had seen first hand what a dictatorship (or a monarchy) is capable of, and the destruction that comes with it.
Try to remember that this thing we call the Constitution was constructed by people who up to that point didn’t have rights. Those Amendments contained within were purchased with blood, and strife, and a lot of hardship.
Once it was all said and done these men meant to create laws to prevent it from happening again.
The Constitution of the United States was seen as the path to success as perceived by those that had been through a lot, and hopefully a pretty good road map to a happy, rewarding and productive life.
Bear that in mind when you stand in a voting line prepared to write a blank check to the powers that be and let them screw with the rights that others endured to secure.
And be careful that those powers aren’t busying themselves shrouding fascism with what they are selling as the greater good.
You have nothing endowed to you by your creator. We must make our own way.
We are fortunate enough that some people came to this conclusion long before any of us were born and who were willing to do more than just talk.
Choices of this sort usually come with a heavy tax.
So I suppose it begs the question what is it that we are going to do today?
Is it Nobler in the mind to suffer The Slings and Arrows of outrageous Fortune,
Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles, And by opposing end them
Or when confronted by that which is unethical or unfair, do we just ride it out?
These are questions you may find yourself confronted with daily, regardless of who you are and what you do for a living.
Each of us will face adversity at some point. No matter how rich or poor you are, life has a way of finding you.
It is then we will ask ourselves: what is it that we are made of?
